my truck will sometimes during idle completely change from a whistle to a deep rumble then back to whistle then rumble and so on until i accelerate. other times it will idle completely normal for a long time. i replaced the ebp sensor and it helped alot but it will still do it sometimes. could this be because i have a k and n air intake? ive heard they mess up sensors but was never really sure.
Some programming strategies will sweep the variable vanes on the turbo which causes the sound of the exhaust to do what you describe. Perfectly normal.
If your truck has been re-flashed to a later programming, it is likely that your turbo vanes will sweep in an out during idle to prevent them from sticking. I believe it is TSB 06E17 (correct me if im wrong!!). So this is normal behavior and nothing to worry about. Although it does ruin the nice whistle at idle...
When deducing my rumble (sounded like a v8 cam car) I watched the EBP sensor get whacked out and would see it tell my VGT to close or open. When the EBP was reading low, the VGT would make the exhaust rumble. Now that the EBP is replaced, the VGT is normal and no more rumble. Had the EBP sensor not fixed my problem I would then look at VGT and if that checked out, would open and clean turbo to see if vaines were sticking.
