Winter is Coming

Hey just wondering at what temperatures I should start plugging in my truck? Also the same for when I should put the "bra" or the cover or whatever it is over the front grill. This is my first diesel and winter is coming up here fast. Thanks!

There is probably some formal guidelines that others will chime in on but I start considering plugging in when it gets below 20 degrees.

Not sure about formal guide lines but....
I plug in at 0F or below.
I put the winter front on the first time I have to drive on the hiway when it is snowing.

Thanks

Title reminded me of the HBO show Game of Thrones, a bit random but a great show none the less. I usually plug mine in when it starts getting below 20 or so and do so out of habit until the season is over.

From the manual:

Cold weather starting

It is recommended that the engine block heater be used for starting
when the temperature is -10°F (-23°C) or colder. Refer to Engine block
heater (if equipped) in the Driving chapter of the Owner’s Guide.
When operating in cold weather, use Motorcraft cetane improvers or
non alcohol-based cetane improvers from a reputable manufacturer.
Do not crank the engine for more than 10 seconds as starter damage
may occur. If the engine fails to start, turn the key to 3 (off) and wait
30 seconds before trying again.

I don't plug it in at all, have been to -40 below F, no problems. I like to know when I get back to the truck out in the middle of nowhere that my truck will start. If I plug it in all the time at 0 or so I will never know at what temp the truck won't start. For me that is important.

just my .02

And it amazes me that the winter grille cover is not included here. I assure you it gets cold enough.
