I dont think this is just an "off road" issue. Pieces of tubber tire left in the hiway will do a lot of damage to an undercarriage. I know we dont intentionally hit them but sometimes they are unavoidable.
or what about a 2x4 or some other road debris???
yesterday got the part, changed the filters and got my truck up and running. although my truck wasn't near as easy to restart as epics was, and subsequent restarts were also even longer than normal. everything is fine now after driving the truck for a while. BUT every time I was under the truck it keeps bothering me more where that thing is located. I suppose I should be thankful the plug is what broke instead of the entire bowl itself which could easily suffer the same fate.
The fuel filter is one issue, but what about the oil pan and drain plug, are they not also plastic. Maybe FOMOCO should consider a recall retrofitting these vunerable parts. I would like to see an after market oil pan bottom section made of metal. I would replace mine in a heartbeat.

IMO the plastic oil pan on the truck looks fairly substantial. its also mounted about the same points as the wheels, so it should lift with the wheels and with the truck moving I doubt a tire could flip anything up into it. of course anything is possible. however the part I had a problem with is in a place where the truck CAN high center, infact they put skid plates on the these trucks to protect METAL parts when a plastic one hangs down just as low in the same area. its also in an area that if a guy had some serious mud terrain tires a 1" rock could be shot out of the tire tread and direct hit the unit. the sorry thing is IMO there is already room to mount the unit about 2" higher AND they could have made the bracket taller so it could have came down lower on the unit and probably given enough protection AND still maintained easy serviceability.

Everybody harps on the plastic drain pan, but I bet you that the metal pan on a 6.0 or 7.3 would puncture more easily. This is especially true of all the rusted out steel oil pans on the old 7.3 trucks! As for the plastic drain plug, based on it's location it would be extremely difficult to damage that one.
I wonder if Ford did testing related to strength of this pan.
I imagine is strong and it doesn't bother me.
If anyone damages/breaks the yellow oil plug, I sure would like to know what you did.
It looks as if you could play baseball with it in the yard while the oil drains and it would be fine.
Cowboy; Your under belly looks a whole lot different than mine. Do you have the FX4 package, as I don't see the skid plate on the tranny and don't see the fuel tank. I have a 350 extended cab 4x4, FX4 and there is only a couple of inches on each side of the filter to the fuel tank and tranny skid plate. The little mod I did wouldn't work with what I see in your pictures.
I agree, the skidplate on my FX4 looks just like that picture and it creates an angle that pretty much excludes anything from kicking up off the tires and hitting the fuel canister. I can see how it could happen if you don't have the skidplate. Nonetheless it is still a fragile piece of plastic that is definitely exposed to potential hazards. If that valve only costs a few dollars it may be better insurance to keep a spare in the glovebox than it was to keep a spare CPS with a 7.3!
my truck does not have the FX 4 and its also a long bed, It actually looks safer on the short bed models because the fuel tank is closer to it. that FX4 setup does look to help a ton. ok thats another thing I should have gotten on my truck. if I had the FX 4 I would take a 8" wide piece of 1/4" rubber, and with sheet metal screws attach it to the back of the fx4 skid plate the back lip where it goes up. then I run run that up to the back of the seperator bracket making a protective belt, looking at the picture again yeah it looks like you moved that thing a ton higher.
Here we go again, how about this one Crazy. This post has me concerned alot. I do admit to being a professional worrier and for a small fee any of you could pm me any of your concerns and I will worry about it for you, alowing you to go about your day worry free trippin down the cobblestones and feelin groovy. When is the last time you heard the G word? But I digress; This seperater was destroyed by a rock but I engage in a far more hazardous atctivity, driving in chopped corn fields. The stubble varries from 6 to 18 inches high and is just a bit softer than wood.I can see with certanty a cornstalk being pushed down by the skid plate and popping up hitting the seperater. Theres whole lot of slappin goin on down there driviin a cut corn field.

Thanks for the idea! It's nice to see a post with a possible solution.
I am working on a skid plate to protect it from rocks, cotton/corn stalks, highcentering, or just getting stuck. I want to be able to drain the water separator/change filter easily. Initially I had planned on drilling mounting holes through the frame, but decided not to.
