The ZF has an integrated bellhousing, and overall, is a stockier built tranny...

As for the tranny tag...ZF s42 or ZF S47 is what you're looking for, IIRC...

Thanks! Do you happen to know what years they used these in. I can start a search by years and then get under and take a look.

The ZF5 came out in 1987 as a OPTION, but was standard equipment in all heavy duty trucks in 1988 -

This is what a M5R2 (Mazda tranny) looks like, it is all aluminum long skinny housing.

The ZF is a short fat tranny with a PTO cover on the passenger side of the case.

^^ That's wrong.

The S42 was all ZF's untill 1994-95? Then the upgraded S47 came out, with upgraded parts and bearings to handle more torque.

Hold up....My understandings were that the S42 was the Close Ratio'd tranny, and the S47 was the Wide ratio'd tranny.....

Where am I getting that from? lol

I am not sure, I can't remember where I read what I had stated before, but I did some more reading today and what I found confirmed what dieseljohn said.. I probably read it on some forum somewhere from some guy like me who was misinformed.... As to your question, maybe it was the small block 42 was close ratio and the BB/diesel 42 was wide ratio... Same for the newer 47 as well???

There are small block, big block, and diesel versions of the S5-42 with close and wide ratios. I think gas versions only had the wide ratio and diesels may have had an option - don't know for sure. The same bell housing patterns were also available starting around '95 in the S5-47 which had increased torque capacity. The S5-47 was also available with a modular engine bell housing used in the '99-up super duty trucks with the 5.4 V8 and 6.8 V10.

ZF S5-42 shift lever/boot?

Having my mech. replace my M5OD with a ZF S5-42 in my '95 F-150 4x4 w/302.

Getting the ZF from a JY, but she isn't coming with the shifter. I've scoured the internet and called a few JYs with no luck, does anyone know where I could get a ZF S5-42 shift lever/boot?

If there anything else that you could think of that I need to get/order while I'm at it? He's putting a new clutch in it as well.
