I have a 57 292 and would like to put a new style 4 speed on the back, getting away from the big old truck style. My plans are to be able to cruise on 3-4 day trips. Any suggestions would be great. thanks
Jebby, welcome to FTE.Your 57 will have, assuming it's original, a 272 motor. It's the same Y-block, just smaller in cubic inches for that year.
I don't know of anyone who's put a "newer" 4-speed behind a Y.The more common swap for a manual tranny is the T-5.I'm sure someone who has done it will reply, it does require some fab skills, as well as gathering the correct parts. Also, there ought to be at least a few good articles in the FTE archives that discuss this swap and others. If you can, do a search. If you as a new member can't use the search function, someone will be good enough to provide the links.
There are 3 or 4 (maybe more) "adapters" that will allow you to put an automatic behind a Y.
One of the quick and relatively inexpensive things you can do to improve your driving experience, is to have the gears changed out in the rear end.If you're lucky, there will still be a tag affixed to it that will tell you what it currently is.It's often nearly invisible beneath years of grease. If it's gone, you can determine the gear ratio from your VIN tag on the glovebox door.
Jebby,I forgot to mention that you should also visit the Y-Block section of FTE,and perhaps pose your Y-Block specific questions there. Many in the 48-60 Forum either have an earlier flathead motor,or have replaced their stock engines with newer generation one.Me,I love my Y-Block.
I am pretty sure you can get a bell housing that lets you bolt a 3.03 three speed, top loader 4 speed, and top loader impostor (same bolt pattern) to a Y block. The top loader impostor is actually overdrive on 4th, which can be very nice.
