Howdy y'all. I'm about ready to drop in my new motor into my '66 F-250, I would appreciate any suggestions on what to use for an ignition setup. Pertronix? Dual points? Unilite? I don't want to spend abunch, but I want some performance. I like the Davis Unified set-up, but I'd catch alot of smack from them bow-tie pushin' bablers at the strip, It's a little on the spendy side anyway. It will be used for a .040" 390 (398) c4ae heads rv cam edelbrock performer intake and carb, w/headers, C-6 auto. Any opinions would be appreciated.
I have been running the Unilite conversion for many years with out a problem (knock on wood)..The only down side is you have to use their rotor..I would stay away from any form of points..
The pertronix is also great and you use the same cap and rotor. The whole conversion takes about 70 bucks and 5 minutes. I am going MSD all around in the future.
I went with the Pertronix ign and coil combo then had the dist recurved by a pro and did the big cap conversion. It works great and I haven't had any problems with it for about 1 year now.
If I wanted something better, I'd probably get the Digital 6 Plus from MSD because it has a built in rev limiter and starter retard. I think it's about $270. The starter retard backs up the timming during starts and this causes it to spin faster and start faster, but you can still keep you curve.
