Basics question...carb/air cleaner.

Just a question regarding vacuum lines, and air cleaner hoses while the air filter housing is removed from the Carb.

Is there any particular lines that are critical for proper carb adjustments. (relative to the air cleaner housing)

Picked up my first real truck 86 f250 w/460 c6. with 73k miles.

If spring ever shows up...I can start tuning.
Once warmed my truck Idles high.

Any air cleaner upgrades to recomend?

Looking forward to tuning, u joints, tightening up front suspension (Bushings?) Checking out brakes, and eventually painting, if I don't come across any major problems.

I'm hoping to pull a decent sized horse trailer with this puppy.
I'm fairly sure the gear ratio is set up for hauling.

Bring on your advise...great web page here.

Thanks /D

Basics question...carb/air cleaner.

I would keep the original aircleaner. It should have a vacuum line that you have to unhook to get it off. This goes to a temperature controlled valve and then to the flapper door in the snorkel. This will draw warm air from a pipe going to the exhaust manifold to make the engine run better in cold weather. You might also have a larger pipe hooked to a filter looking thing in the aircleaner. This is the fresh air intake for the PCV system. The PCV valve sucks fumes out of the crankcase, and fresh air enters the crankcase through the pipe and filter going to the aircleaner.

If it idles high, the first thing I would check is after it is warmed up, pull the aircleaner lid off and make sure the choke door on top of the carb throat is standing straight up-wide open. If it is half closed, then it's probably still on the fast idle cam. You can turn the black round choke housing on the passenger side of the carb to adjust the choke so it is wide open when warm. But I would put a mark on it so you can put the adjustment back if you have to.
