Do you really have to remove the crossover exhaust and the transfer case on an 86 BII, 2.9L manual transmission to get at the clutch? How much clearance is required to remove the transmission-how high does to BII have to be raised?
No, you should not have to remove any of the exhaust, assuming it's all stock. It may however make things easier. There is enough clearance to get it out (I've done it). You don't have to remove the Transfer Case if you don't want to, but it does make life easier if you remove it, due to weight and balance.
OK, thanks. My repair manual said to remove the cross over exhaust (at the manifolds). It looks like there is room to get it (trans) out and over without removing.
After looking at the transfer case, it looks to be pretty easy to get off.
The hardest part about the removal of the T-case would be the top bolt. I think there are 5 all together. Anyway the top one will take about 10 minutes as you can't get more than an 8th of a turn. It sucks, but so does removing the exhaust.
