My 2006 F250 Crew Cab 6.0L PSD, 71000 miles, is having some intermittent steering problems. My wife told me that twice over the past two months she has been turning and lost the assistance of the power steering. She turned the opposite direction, after the problem appeared, and she was immediately able to regain the assistance of power steering.
I was able to replicate the above problem after two days of driving the truck in city conditions, while intentionally making as many turns as possible. I then took my truck in for a flush of the power steering system. I watched as the mechanic properly used a vacuum system to extract the old Mercon and replaced it with new Mercon V.
Now the problem happens more often. I drove around the city after the fluid flush and had the above problem occur twice out of approximately fifty turns. This occurs at low speed, low rpm, while turning slightly or sharply. My wife reports that while driving home from work the next day the same problems occurred twice in a ten mile city commute.
Has anyone had any experience with the above?
Edited out braking application fixing problem... only turning in opposite direction immediately fixes the problem.
The problem occurred again on my way home. I found that this problem does not go away with the application of the brake pedal as previously reported to me from my wife.
Wonder if a hose is collapsing or maybe getting pinched occasionally.
The only other thing is the steering box but I haven't seen many of those fail. The older trucks had a few issues with boxes gett'n sloppy but other than that they're pretty reliable.
