i have a '74 f250 2wd, with a 390 v-8, ford motorcraft double barrel 2100.... would it make it sense or could i even convert it to a quadra jet carb on there? or should i try cleanin the 2100 and makin it work?
The 2100 is a good carb and really easy to clean and rebuild... A $20 parts kit and a $20 gallon of ChemTool, a little patience, and you should be good to go. Personally, I'd rebuild it.
Compare that with a new $280 carb, a $250+ intake, and, well,, do the math. A quadrajet can be a good carb but it'd need a spread bore intake but you can run an adapter. Regardless, either a stock 4V or aftermarket intake is required.
The Performer 2105 or 7105 is a decent intake and about 70 lbs lighter... ya might blow a brain gasket simply removing the HEAVY 2V intake!!! Watch yer toes! Couple the intake with a 600 or 650 cfm carb and it makes a decent combo. A quadrajet, to me, is unnecessarily cumbersome. However, I recommend dual exhaust as your initial upgrade.... after rebuilding the carb.
thanks silver... the cost alone is a deterrent.. 40 bucks compared to hundreds is a no brainer.. the rebuild kit that you mentioned, can that be bought at an box car shop,(autozone, pep boys)?.. and also, to fully understand what you are saying, it would be a good idea to change the exhaust manifold after i rebuild the carb or is that if i bought the new conversion kit and that other stuff? but i did have plans on running dual exhaust anyway..(it runs off the passenger side in front of the tire.)
The rebuild kit should be available at most parts stores. The carburetor should have a tag with an ID number on it; take this number to the store and they should be able to cross-reference the specific kit. I wouldn't go to a place like AutoZone for this, as they typically sell "one size fits all" kits - go to a place like Napa where the guy will actually pull out the book and look it up.
Make sure you rebuild it completely (as in soak it in solution), not just spray it down with a can.
