I guys and gals, i hang out in the 7.3 forum, got a question for you f150 guys, on a 97 150 4x4 can you repack the front bearings, or are they unit bearing, or what's the deal, brother in law is having moaning sound going around cures to the left only. Thanks in advance.
Its one piece with the abs sensor built in, the unit is pressed together, I would imagine if you had the right tools to do it, it could be possible, but i dont think its worth the effort, just bolting on the new assy is alot easier
It's a bearing pack that includes the hub and wheel lugs.
Here is what has to be done after you remove the wheel.
1. Remove the brake caliper and the pads.
2. Remove the caliper mount from the back side.
3. Remove the brake disc.
4. Remove cotter pin, casle nut holding sleeve and the 37mm large retaining nut from the driver axle CV spline.
5. Remove bolts holding the bearing pack from the rear and slide off the drive axle spline.
Reverse the procedings.
.
First check to see if the disc or wheel moves in any direction while the spindle stays put. If yes, the bearing pack needs to be changed.
If you feel roughness when the disc is turned, the bearing pack needs to be changed.
This bearing pack is often the cause of brake shudder when they get really floppy and if let it go long enough you would begin to see tire wear from it on the inside edge of the tire tread.
Need some muscle and some loosenall of some sort in getting the bolts out and bearing pack off the spline.
The bearing pack is about double the cost of a whole CV axle assembly so watch the CV rubber boot, you don't tear it apart then would need to replace that as well by removing the bolts at the drive flange at the front drive carrier.
Get under and look at all this before you begin and have your parts ready even if you have to return unused parts for a refund.
Good luck.
Just a update, got the unit bearing from Rock Auto, Timken, no abs 116$ shipped to the door, took two hours, my charge 50$, for anyone it's a easy job, just like my Dana 60. Again thanks everyone.
