I have a 2001, 4.6L, Autotrans, Supercrew that has recently developed a problem that is getting worse rapidly. It started as an uneven bumping or stuttering when cruising at a steady speed of about 35 mph and has progressively gotten worse. Yesterday it was very rough starting off and when shifting. The check engine soon light came on a few weeks ago (haven't had time to check it out yet). The engine seems to rev fine. When cold, the trans fluid level is at the top of the crosshatches. When hot, running and in park, it is at the top the crosshatches also and tiny bubbles are present.
I plan to have the engine scanned soon but would like to know if anyone has come across this problem.
How many miles on your truck?
The check engine light is where you need to start. Get the system scanned for codes either at a Ford dealer or for free at an Autozone. Make a note of the code you get....not just the description of it. Chances are pretty good you will have a P030* for a cylinder miss. It sounds like you probably have a bad spark plug or coil pack.
Thanks for the reply Dave.
The truck has 26k miles. I've already dropped it off at a local Ford dealer. I'll be sure to get the fault code and let you know what happens.
Just picked the truck up from the dealer. They reported a Code 28, bad coil pack on cylinder number 2. They replaced the coil and the spark plug. They also replaced the EGR Pressure Sensor Assy. under a recall notice.
The truck runs great, but how long before the next coil goes bad??
Good that it was nothing serious
As for how long til next time, you never really know.
I've seen some with 200,000 kms on the original coils and others that needed more than one at your mileage.
