Guys, I have a 2001 F-450 7.3 6 spd. I bought the truck last year as a cab & chassis which i have since installed a 11ft down easter dump. The truck runs good but I am wondering about the power the truck has. This is my first diesel so i have nothing to compare it to.
Last year i did have to do the driver side UVCH in which this forum helped me diagnose. The truck is running excellent since then but just a few days ago I used the truck to tow my 30ft Laredo TT home. I was expecting the truck to perform much better but I could not keep up with my buddy in his new dodge sport with the 5.7L hemi.
Is there some simple tests I could perform on various components to see if everything is as it should be. I am fairly mechanically inclined and work as an instrumentation technician on a oil & gas facility offshore. Any suggestions would be good.

I'd check first for boost and exhaust leaks. A boost leak detector is easy to make, but you can check and tighten the six boots between the turbo and heads as a start. For exhaust, look for soot stains on the up-pipes (behind the turbo) and around the exhaust manifolds (particularly around cyl #8, on the driver's side in back).
Do you have boost and EGT guages, by chance? Post up numbers if you do.

It's sort-of difficult to compare a 2001 F450 work-designed vehicle weighing close to 9,000 lbs with a 6-speed manual transmission with a 2011 Dodge "Sport" gas Hemi weighing in around 6,000 lbs. They have two different functions, and I'm sure your F450 is probably geared low with 4.10 or greater rear differential.
Now, that being said, the 7.3L can be modified greatly to increase power and performance...but it's still not the greatest comparison.
You need to open up the intake, open the exhaust with a 4" turbo-back exhaust, put gauges on it (to know what's going on) and then chip it with something like a DP Tuner.
As previously mentioned, boots can be leaking, up-pipes, etc. that will cause you to lose boost and power too. So check all that stuff out.
I'd rather have your truck than your friend's. Am I biased? Yes. I love "HERS" Excursion more today than the day I drove it off of the lot new in 2000.

i was kind of hoping to stay stock and just fix potential issues that I may have that is causing power loss. If everything is ok then maybe i will purchase a power adder later like a DP tuner product to increase Hp and TQ.

I'm sure there are people on here that will take offence to that.
