I have an 87 560sl and an 88 300te. Both are in great shape, and the 560sl was featured in a calendar from a M-B site. It was voted in over a highly modified SL.
I'm not sure of the curb weight of the F-250. I'll have the JY tell me on my next scrap metal run.
as far as the 5th wheel vs. bumper pull trailer issue goes, if the truck drives fine with the bumper pull, I would just leave it be. a gooseneck will usually drive better cause it will put more of the weight on the front, rather than levering it away (that dreadful nose-up that makes it tough to steer, see, and blinds other people at night). if the truck isn't constantly hooked up to the trailer and traveling longer distances, i wouldn't worry about a gooseneck. but of course if it was, I would recommend a 7.3 with it.
I have had a 2500 dodge cummins on a 16' bumper behind my little f150 and it (obviously) was to much for it, one of those last acts of desperation cause the dodge couldn't propel itself and had to get towed by a $500 f150 (I took pictures), however I have pulled ~5000 on the same trailer behind my dads 84 f250 and it handled it just fine.
not really a mercedes guy myself, never been around many of em. but i wouldn't mind a 617 diesel in a ranger.
even your load out and youll be fine i had 4 ton on a bumper pull on my 88 F-150, also have a 01 2500hd GMC 4 door short bed 6.0 gasser truck and trailor weigh 11500 and weve ra across the scales with it at 24600 but it was evened out on the trailor (12000 pound excavator)
