Okay, so I picked up this 1977 Ford for $250, it has a 351m and a 4 speed, the engine looks pretty good, and the guy said that it only has about 5,000 miles on it, and i trust him, I have known him all my life, anyway, went and picked it up, dumped some gas in the carb and she fired up after a couple times, did miss a little and pop when you got into the throttle but oh well, I was ready for a test drive, got in it, it started right up, started down the road and shifted through the gears, but it was still running rough, about 2/10 of a mile down the road, I started down this big hill, and then went around a turn to go up a hill and the truck shut off, i had a gas can with me and i figured that i would dump gas in the carb and see, well i did and it started up, so i went and got gas, then I dumped it in the truck and then gas in the carb and now it wont even fire, i haven't checked for spark or anything, but I do know that it is getting fuel, so it should start. Any suggestions? I am getting a coil and a pickup coil in the distributor and new plugs for it tomorrow, hopefully it runs. Any help is appreciated. I really can't just go and see if it has spark and then run back cause it is a good bit away from my house. Thank you.
You have to be more specific with stuff like this...
What do you mean when you say "the truck shut off?" Was there no electrical power, like it stopped running as if the key had been shut off? do the other electrical devices work?
Or did it stumble and gasp and act like it had run out of gas?
You need to check fuel delivery & spark, dumping gas into the carb is not what I mean there.
What is the history of this thing? Had it been sitting for umpteen years before running again?
Might also take the DSII ignition module (I'm assuming your truck has this ignition) to the parts store and have it tested.
Thanks for your help, well the thing had been sitting for 5 years, I took the ignition control module off and got another one, and that was the problem, starts up and runs like a champ, another classic Ford on the road again! (:
