Im thinkin about buyin an 01 explorer sport with the 4.0 and 4 wheel drive. are there any pattern failures on these new model explorers or stuff to watch out for or to check before a purchace?

About the only part that fails on a regular basis is the rear wiper motor. Also before you buy it check all the diff and t-case seals. What is the mileage on it? The tranny fluid should be completly flushed about every 30k if its an auto. Also the 4.0 OHV has better reliabilty than the 4.0 SOHC. If you do get the SOHC, make sure the timing chain guides are not broken. If they are, it will sound like a can of marbles in the left valve cover. They are covered under warranty for 7 years or 100k by program 01M01. Depending on who you buy it from they may reduce the price if they are broke
Also check the wear pattern on the tires. They should be flat with no dips or ridges.

FYI, only the SOHC 4.0 Liter V6 is offered in the 2001 and up Sport. This is just an observation, but it appears it was mainly the first 2 or 3 years that this engine had that problem (first year was 97).
