How to remove carbon?

Hello, I would like to know what is a safe way to remove carbon from the valves with the head still on. I have a miss in my 400 and it is trying to smooth out. I think it has a buildup of carbon.

Thanks Chad

How to remove carbon?

the water mist will work in the combustion chamber but might have little effect on valves. i've heard of a "deep soak" method from the old-timers. probably not recomended with a catalytic converter or oxygen sensors, etc... it involves pouring at least a quart of oil down the carb while running the engine. starting out slowly and controlling the throttle to keep it running but not necessarily reving high. towards the end of the quantity of oil pour it faster so that the engine kills at the end of the oil, or just let the throttle down so it dies out. but don't let the engine lock up because of too much oil in the cylinders. let sit for a couple of days for the oil to soak into the carbon. pull the plugs and crank the engine through to blow excess oil out, put clean plugs in and start engine. close all the windows in the house first, though. the neighbors are going to love you! never done it myself. there are products on the shelf that say they work also. if you do try the soak method i would follow it with carb cleaner in the tank for a while. or you could just try that, a bottle or two in every tank. i get mine at the dollar stores, same stuff, just a buck a bottle instead of 3 or 4
