Hey Guys,
I just got new front axle u-joints pressed in. The problem is I am trying to put the axle shaft back in thru the steering knuckle but the new u-joints won't clear the opening. The caps stick out just a hair more than the stock ones I guess. I thought I read about this happening to someone else too ,but can't find the thread now. Should I just try to grind the cap a little bit? I don't know what else to do.
the caps dont stick out past the joint atleast when i did mine there should be clips that hold the caps into each axle shaft... the ujoints shouldnt have any problem clearing anything... pics always help if i got this wrong.
When I did mine on a '95 f250, the caps were recessed into the yolk and I believe there was even a clip ring in the yolk to retain the cap. They may not have pressed your caps in completely...
Hey thanks for the replies. I was also thinking maybe the cap isn't seated all the way ,but I had a machine shop press them in so I would think they are in good. The cap is just barely hitting the opening in the knuckle. Do you think it would be ok to smack the end of the axle shaft with a hammer to force them thru?
your u-joints are not installed properly. I imagine you have got the needle bearings knocked over, and the cap cannot be pressed in to put the clips in. The way that is set now, IF you get it in, will come apart in a short amount of time.
I wrote this for md chapter a while ago, I hope it helps
I'm going one of two routes, both of which have already been mentioned.
1) The wrong u-joints were installed.
2) Perhaps one of the needle bearings got knocked over and is preventing complete installation of the u-joints. Even with a press this will prevent proper seating.
Either remove the joint yourself or take it back to the shop and have them check it. If they are reputable they will check it no charge to make sure it's not their work that is the problem.
had run in to this before with the problem with d44 ttb being the orignal caps having a beveled edges and the new one having a completly flat cap ........ if thats the case i just take a scotch brite gasket cleaner and buzz the corners a lil to take sharp edge off
Hey nvrsatisfied84 that is what I am talking about!! Your exactly right these are flat opposed to the originals. I will give the scotch brite a try. Thanks
