Okay, I did a search through the forum, checked lots of threads, and can't seem to find the answer I need.
I have a 1996 F-150 that we're grafting a body from a 1960 Mercury to. We want to keep a '1960' look in the cab so naturally, the stock '96 guages will have to go. My questions are as follows: (Bear in mind that everything is 1996 except the skin...computers and everything are in place...)
Will the truck work properly if I just unplug the '96 guages?
If so, hooking up aftermarket gauges for the water, oil, and alternator are going to be easy, but will aftermarket gauges for the fuel tank and the spedometer and tach read from the ford sender?
There's lots of room in the dash, should I just leave the '96 gauges hooked up in the background and run additional gauges to my '60 dash?
I hope y'all get what I'm trying to say...any other input would be greatly appreciated.
Depends is the truck MAF or Speed Density? I think your problem will come with the speedo if it's speed density. Also, you can't run it without the alternator gauge plugged in or the alternator will not charge anything. Also, if you have dual tanks, that switch must be plugged in or the truck won't start.
Okey dokey...it doesn't have dual tanks, so that's not a problem. Is the alternator catch specific to the factory ford gauge? Or will it work with an aftermarket alternator gauge hooked up.
How do I tell if the works on MAF or speed density? It's got what I think is a mass-air-flow sensor on the air box, (little bitty tube sticking into the airflow with a four-wire harnes..just after the filter) So is that what I'm looking for? If it is MAF can I just unhook the whole gauge package (taking into account the alternator thing) and run my own gauges?
There's no provision for a mechanical speedo drive on the 96 tranny, the speedo drives off the anti-lock brake sensor in the diff. I'm not sure about the smaller instruments, some connect to the PCM and some don't. You need to get a wiring diagram or at least an EVTM for the 96 to try to sort it all out.
About the fitting and looking funny: I think I'm going to use the 1960 dash panel and fit aftermarket gauges behind it so that it looks '60ish...perhaps lightly smoked glass overtop to kinda hide the modernness...
About getting the EVTM diagrams: I'm currently waiting for delivery of one of those Chilton 6-cdrom sets...hoping everything I need will be in there. If not I'll be headed to EBay...
Actually not, the service manual has little to nothing on the wiring. What he needs is the EVTM (Electrical and Vacuum Troubeshooting Manual) and the wirung diagram.
