HELLO,
I have a 88 F-150 4X4 302 V8 with a 5-speed, My Tranny leaks pretty bad, and after close inspection it seems to be coming from the top of the transmission, and it is 80/90 weight gear oil. The owner prior to me must have been an idiot, unless maybe one of you have heard of this being done before? Anyhow does any one have any advice on what I should do?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 04:28 PM (EST)]I am assuming you have the M5OD as I'm not sure when they first appeared in the trucks. If it is an M5OD you should be running ATF not the thick gear lube. Most likely it is what the ford dealer will call the inner boot which is basically a seal where the shifter goes through. You can replace this from inside by removing the outer boot and unbolting the shifter. While you are there another area to look at is the front of the shifter plate which comes from factory with rubber plugs and is a common cause of destroying this transmission. Usually no-one sees oil leaking from here as it usually happans at speed not sitting still. You can replace the rubber plugs as they are cheap or I used the steel core plugs (like tiny freeze plugs). If it is the "top" plate it is sealed with an o ring but I have gone back and unbolted this and fixxed the leak with a bit of rtv to fix weeping leaks. No need to unbolt all the way just enough to get a little clearance and apply a little RTV. You just need to figure out where it is coming from. Good luck
