reduced engine power???

I was driving my truck home this afternoon, empty but was going up a long hill at about 20 pounds of boost, and the truck started bucking like it was missing(kinda like a gas car with an ignition problem) and it was bad the whole truck shacking and bucking like crazy, the reduced engine power light came on about 3 minutes later, and there is a loud ticking noise comming fro the motor. I called road side service and they are picking it up in the morning, anyone have a idea what may be wrong, maybe some speculation, and I will keep you all posted on what they say.

sounds to me like it is valve train related or HPFP related.

Plan on being without the truck for the week at least.

Gather your maintance records now.

it is a 2008 and it only has 30,000 miles on it, and I just bought it 2 months ago from a ford dealer, and that is where i am having it sent too. and they were the last to service it, and the glove box has a bunch of records from the old owner and it was all dealer done. I hope there is no issues on that front

That should be well covered then.

A tip for you. Register by your vin here:https://owner.ford.com/servlet/Conte.../Page/HomePage

There you can log in your maintance and the dealer will do the same. Great to have if you travel.

So the truck got towed to the shop yesterday morning, this afternoon I get a call, and they say it bent a push rod. and now they have to take to motor out to figure out why it bent so they can get it fixed, has anyone here had a bent push rod in there 6.4 before? so it looks like I will be with out my truck for a while. and that sucks... and they have no idea how long its going to take. they are waiting for the tech rep from ford to get back with them and tell them what to do. anyone have some insite on what may have happened. I dont want them to just replace the push rod, adjust the valve and call it good. If the push rod is bent I am wondering if the valve is bent slightly too.

dropped a valve or a hydrolock condition comes to mind.

bent push rods

listen I know what you are experiancing is strange, however what I am learning is that the contractor vehicles are having all this stuff happen and more. I know its tough when this kind of thing happens, I am working with these kind of problems daily. So far there are some disturbing things i have discovered, the most important is how many cams are being wiped out by the roller lifters, I heard a story from a person that the oils we use have a different formula, not protecting the hardning. This has been going on 6.0's and 6.4's at an alarming amount, some vehicles have had several miles others have had less. the cost for the repairs are expensive and require many hours to compleat them. HOWEVER, we have had probably have had 6 with in the last year that have had one bent push rod, granted we also found one of the rockers for that cylinder had a broken ball socket. so we replaced the rocker assembly, and both push rods. and a couple fuel lines, started it up and away they went. When you get into these things (6.4's) it is difficult to see the long range / high milage life that the 6.0's or the 7.3's have enjoyed. to sum it up, i hope it was just a broken rocker assembly that caused the problem, my advise is that IF you are planning to keep this vehicle that you concider buying a FORD ESP plan. I know the 6.0's had there issues, however the 6.4's have issues that are causing fleet owners concidering rebranding there fleets. I get upset over this engine family and what it is doing to our customers, however there is nothing I can do but continue to keep repairing the problems that plauge this engine. Now as for the the new 6.7 I wouldnt jump to them quite so fast, as were starting to identify issues with them as well. I believe the reason we see more contractor related issues than POV'S is primarly related to the lack of daily inspection / maintance. I am learning that low coolant is one of the worst enemys of the 6.4's, after that is overdue oil changes (which leads to being overfull)
good luck with your truck.

so I got my truck back this afternoon, on the paperwork it said when the removed the valve cover, found the #8 rocker off, and a bent push rod, than the called the ford hotline to see what may have called the problem, the removed and checked the EGR, wich checked good. the checked a bunch of fuel line/ingector stuff which all checked good, they replaced the rocker and pushrod, a fuel line and put it all back togather and gave it back after almost 2 weeks, and not even 20 miles later she's making the same noise as before, and driving the same, does ANYONE have any idea what may be going on with this thing, so when i get to the dealer tomorrow I can have some firepower

Good question...unfortunately without an experienced tech looking at your truck I doubt anyone here will be able to help you. High mileage valvetrain problems aren't unheard of, but I've never heard of a botched repair before. Sounds to me like someone didn't assemble the valvetrain correctly.

It has to go back to the dealer, please let us know how it goes!

the truck only has 30,000 miles on it, my issue is what caused it in the first place, and why does it seem like it has just done the exact same thing not even 20 miles later.

If I were you I'd take it somewhere else if you can. My guess is the same as Tom's the repair was not up to spec.

As to why I happened in just 30K miles...that is the question of the hour. I am thinking this has sat alot and when that happens it has lead to stuck valves in the past.

I liped the thing to the dealer this morning, and when i was talking to the diesel tech, he told me he was only allowed todo what ford tells him todo. I asked if a new motor was out of the question, he said no its not, but before ford throws that kind of money into it, they are going to fix all the small stuff first. he went on to tell me that every service this truck has had in its life, was done by him at the dealer, and he had all the records for the oil changes, fuel filter changes, all the warrenty work that has been done for reflashing the computor, and some radio issue it had when it was new. so I feel alot more cofortable that the truck was takin care of before I bought it.
while we were talking he stated that for has a limited availibility on these 6.4 short blocks becuase of the crap going on between them and internastional. he stated he is going to have to call the engineers back and see where they want him to go. anyone have an idea what they may do next?

so I got the truck back from the dealer again..... and to my excitement they changed the motor, due to the #8 intake valve rollor lifter came apart which ground down the camchaft, and is now the lifter is stuck in the block and they found metel pieces in the oil pan, and the crank bearings had some gouges in them. the truck runs better than when i first got it,

Glad you got it taken care of. Things like this are what scared me out of buying a 6.4. Get the extended warranty for sure if you plan on keeping it.
