So im turning 100k. After i decided to change my plugs at 50k. Because of the big plug break scare (sorta like the 2k thing), my new plugs (autolites) have about 50k on them and they are causing the truck to run a lil rough. As per a mechanic friend of mine. So off to the ford dealer (since i only want motorcraft parts, aftermarket for me has been junk), and what do i find out. Ford/mortocraft has changed the design of the plug. Know what else they changed, the price. 25 dollars per plug. after i recovered from my heart attack the guy at the counter got the price down to 19 per plug for me. Come to find out later that these plugs retail for 33 per plug. So thank you everyone who complained about the plug problem, dont worry about it because motocraft has it under control now. But before you blast me for going to the dealer and buying motorcraft parts. Just know this, i came to the realization that after spending/ wasting 2k on aftermarket parts, they just are not the way to go for me. they may work for you and that is good. and as for the dealer, im willing to pay a lil extra for good customer service.
I bought a set of Motorcraft SP515 plugs from Oreilly's (Kragens) for $8 each. You can get them online from their site for the same price as well. I have 5K on them already. So far so good.
I seem to recall SP509's were the original replacements. So they must have revised something again
I ran Autolite platinums in a former car of mine. Total junk. They didn't last for more than 15K before idle quality went south. They were visibly worn when I swapped them out shortly after that.
Somethings are OK for the aftermarket but then there are parts that I would only purchase in Motorcraft brand and plugs is one of them. I read about a guy who spent a few K tearing apart and rebuilding his engine trying to find out what the problem was and then replaced the plugs with motorcraft and tossed the champions he had and the problem was fixed. The plugs only had about 15k on them so who would of thought to start there.
I tried the Champions
Truck just didn't like 'em. I tried chasing a little miss for months, replacing boots, coils etc. Then I took it to a Ford Tech and he chased it for a day and was scratching his head too. He asked about the plug change I did and I told him I used Champions. He told me to change them again back to Motorcraft and he'd bet on it the problem would be gone.
I did it and it was. Truck has run like a champ ever since.
Turned 100K yesterday
well now my motor has a miss and it it killing me. i changed all the plugs, coil boots and it developed a miss on cyl 4. So i swaped the coil with #1 and still no change. So then i swaped the plug #4 with #1 and now it is not throwing the code (p0304) any more but still running like crap. Any one got any advice for me.
