Another engine question
How do I know what size motor is in my truck? I'm almost positive it's not original...so the VIN is out 
My friend told me that the size is stamped under the #1 cylinder on the block itself...but I don't see it. Is there any sure fire place I can look?

I've never heard about the stamp on the #1 cyl, but first if the intake goes under the valve cover, then it's an FE.
Second, you can't tell an FE's size from the outside, you have to measure the stroke and guess or measure the bore.
If you remove the plugs and place a wood dowel in the #1 cyl, you can run thru the stroke by rotating the engine and mark the dowel against a reference point on the head.
A 3.5" stroke = 360 or 352
A 3.78" stroke probably a 390
A 3.98" stroke probably a 410 or 428
All the FE engine look the same from the outside except the 427 SO and a few other rare ones.
Without digging into the engine, it's tough to tell anything except the stroke, but the stroke gives you some good info. Most common is the 360 and 390 and that stroke difference is easy enough to tell.
