Premature airbag deployment

We have a 1993 F-150. This truck has never been in a colision. The airbag deployed while the truck was stopped. The driver was in position behind the wheel and a passenger was getting into the vehicle. When the passenger door was shut the airbag deployed. Facial abrasions and bruising resulted. This vehicle was completely checked over by Ford and they stated that a slight scatch found on the bumper indicated to them that the vehicle had been in some sort of front end impact that may have lead to the airbag deployment at a later date. After we got the truck back about two months later, the airbag deployed again. Agian the same situation occured. The driver was in the vehicle and a passenger was getting out of the truck. When the passenger side door was closed the airbag deployed. Minor injuries occured to the driver. Has anyone heard of any other problems such as this. Any suggestions on how to prevent this from occuring. Ford has stated that they are not aware of this type of situation ever occuring before.

Premature airbag deployment

I wasn't even aware that airbags were available in 93 F150's. I thought the first year was 94.

Premature airbag deployment

This is pretty much a quess. The amount of electricity to deploy the airbags is very little. Static electricity has enough of a charge to deploy the airbag. Given that it seams to deal with the passenger door I would check any wiring harnesses that go into the door for damage or exposed wires. You may also want to check that the door switch(dome light, door ajar, etc..) located in the frame is properly grounded. Hope this helps give you someplace to start.

There are 2 impact sensors mounted to the core support and a falsing sensor mounted near the passenger's shoulder belt reel. Look for damage to that sensor or its harness (from speaker installation etc.) and consider replacing it.

Premature airbag deployment

same thing happened in my 95 f 150
after it was repaired i had the airbag taken out and sold it to a body shop for 500 bucks
after seeing how that airbag messed up my buddys face i wasnt about to have it go off in my face
same thing ford said my bumper was damaged and that caused my airbag to go off at another date
i figured the buddy i lent the truck to hit something but he was in a grass field hooking up a trailor at the time
nothing to hit out there
people survived car crashes for many years without the airbag
i feel safe without it still as long as im belted in
