Hey everyone. I own an Expy now, but am looking for a van. Are there any year models or specific issues that the vans have that I should be aware of? Any help would be great. Just for info, I pull a 5400#TT and have to fit two adults 4 daughters and a dog in it...
what time period are you looking for? those with the triton motors have different spark plug problems with different years (some strip, some break off in the head), not what i want on my personal rig.
i own an 87 with the 6.9, and love it, the sliding door is a problem, but thats in part due to old body damage. i would buy it again in a heartbeat. others will be sure to chime in on a newer one
Really depends what your real budget is, whether available funds will be used to acquire a van finished or complete and ready for your use or a base to build something, refitting it into a partial camper etc etc. Mostly likely you'll be looking for a Chateau or Club Wagon, minimum chassis an E250 or E350 for the towing aspect.
I'm always in the market for a new-to-me E van and since distance from me isn't a big concern I haunt eBay to see what's available. My wants go towards an E350 extended body cargo with barn doors and no more glass than the hinged doors. Add in PW, PDL Cruise Control and of course A/C with a V 10 and I'd be happy. If the mileage is less than 150K the 5.4 gasser would be fine too.
Plenty of choices out there along with wide range in pricing----time's on your side if the need isn't urgent.
6 people, dog and luggage + towing, I would look for an extended chassis 250/350. I would be looking for a V10. It is not much worse than 5.4 in fuel economy.
OF course, everything will depend on the budget and what's around you, when you're ready to buy. I like high-tops because you get more room for the same footprint. Plus, high-tops have upgraded/converted interiors which is nice.
Just plan on leaving some money aside for suspension upgrades.
