Has anyone upgraded their alternator from OEM stock (110a) to say a 6G/160a?
If so, has anyone used the website "Quick Start Alternators"?
What about having to increase the cable sizes?
These units are supposed to produce more amps at idle than the OEM units.
What say you brothers?
I forgot to include the site for "DC Power".
Going on almost 1.5 years and no issues with it. Running lot of accessories and no worries.
It looks like a nice unit. Did bolt up without grinding the mounting bracket? I was wondering about the adapter harness they are talking about in the add. Is it a plug and play or did you cut the wires to add it. And did you upgrade battery leads or just run another lead from alt to drivers side battery ?
I installed a 6G cased alternator a year or so back that I bought from Eagle Auto Electric. Zero problems, just be sure to use a 4ga power wire directly from your battery. I used washers to space the alternator up but plan to remove them and grind the bracket to get the necessary clearance. It's a bigger case, so it's one or the other.
I too have been looking at upgrading my alt. I replaced the OEM with a parts house reman April of 2010. since then I have replaced the replacement 5 times. I've even upgraded the replacement. sure its warrantied, but it never fails in a convenient spot.
If I lived in a town I would go to a local rebuilder and get a good one, but I live on the road so a local warranty does me no good.
I looked at both of the ones recommended, I even talked to DC power. DC power recommended the 190 Amp version. It is built using the same case and guts as their 270 amp but "detuned" so to speak. I would have purchased one then but they were a week out on inventory and I was moving on in 4 days. when I get stopped somewhere for a month or so I'll be picking one up.
I am wondering why you need a alternator with higher out put? The stock 110 amp is a lot of charging current.

The spec's on the OEM's appear to have a very minimum charging rate at idle. I have been wandering if the alternator may be responsible for some of these trucks "eating up our batteries". I do not have any hard core data - just speculating.
Hey you guys that have the higher output alternator - did you upgrade the cables or just the one from the alternator?
Also, does that positive cable from the alternator go directly to the passenger side battery or where?
One of those high output sites provides an adapter for the wiring harness on the alternator to match their Delco-Remy unit.

Does anyone have an answer to this. I am having alternator problems and want to buy one alternator and not have to keep taking it back. I would like to know if I can just hook up a bigger alternator without changing cables.
When I added a second alternator, the kit came with larger cables than what is originally on the truck. I picked one up so I could have a mobile welder on my truck. Zena has high output alternators up to 350 amps if you need one that high. I went with a 150 amp and they also make bracket kits so you might give them a call with any questions you may have.
[quote=michaelmcm5;10974208]I have the DC Power 250 amp, with there cables and fuse link. Install was easy, and no problem.
Lets say you really dont need 250 amps but 200 sounds nice. Does extra amps over the stock 130 or 110 hurt anything? I want to eventually add and amp to the systems along with winch and maybe an inverter.
