I need an AOD trans for my 90 Cougar. the one i have shifts late, burns the trans fluid, sends the fluid all the way up the stick, and is now leaking. What is the best and cheapest way to go to get another trans, junk yard, online parts store or what? fresh rebuilt is way out of my price range..............
1. You won't be able to start/drive the vehicle it's coming out of, so you have no idea if it's any good. You simply get a 30 day warranty, so that after to put it in your vehicle, if it doesn't work - they'll give you another. The one you get the first time may be fine. This is the risk/b.s. you get with the cheapest route.
2. Another alternative is to buy one via buying an entire parts car out of your local penny saver type newspaper. At least in this case, you should be able to start it and perhaps take it down the street for a test drive. Probably no warranty though.....
A comprimise between the two is buying the tranny only from the parts section in that same local penny saver type newspaper. you don't get to test it out and you might get a warranty......
Next up the list of alternatives is a rebuilt unit from your local tranny repair franchise.
What about buying the book and getting the rebuild kit for your vehicle. I gotta believe that it can't be more than 150 or so. Could just be that your internals need some work.
that crossed my mind, but i have never rebuilt a trans before, i mean i can do brakes and stuff, but i am a bit squimish about doing my own tranny, how hard is it? also i have found one in a local parts yard, used, if the give me a warranty, should i go for it, only 250$????
(That's a interesting user name, not greeneyes but greeneye....)
I would go for the $250.00 unit IF they give a 30 day guaranty. But that's me. In this area $250.00 is pretty good IF they put a guaranty on it. However;
1. You gotta put it in immediately because that 30 days starts the minute you walk out with it.
2. I think it's the TV cable hook up that is critical on these AODs. If you don't hook it up and adjust just right, you'll fry the unit PDQ.
I would take it to a tranny shop and have them install and adjust it. That way, the wrecking yard can't say you frigged it up if it don't work and they'll get that TV cable (or whatever it is) right.
But again - that's just me - auto trannys are like plumbing and windows - I don't do them.
Others will likely have different opinions from mine...
lol, yes i am the EYE, you have to be original these days.
Thanks , your opinion does matter, AND GET THIS.i found a tested trans, meaning, the guy drove the car before it was removed for 200 buckaroos, think im gonna go with that one, plus its got the 30 day warranty,
thanks for your input
