zf 5 speed problems!

hey just bought a 1995 ford f250 7.3l directinjection turbo diesel. On the way to work today the trans started to smoke and make a grinding sound.

the clutch is new, (so the previous owner claims).

i drove a whopping 33.7 miles with the truck before the trans died.

truck info

1995 f250 7.3l direct injection turbo diesel

ZF 5 speed 4x4

337264.7 miles

Can you be a bit more specific on what happened? did it just start making noise? or did it quit working all together?

The transmission was smoking? Lol, I would say that would be a symptom of a problem. I'll subscribe just to find out what was going on.

Yeah, more detail. Does it grind in neutral or clutch down, or only when propelling the truck? What color smoke? From what part of the tranny? Did you check the fluid? Did you check for obvious stuff like some foreign object wrapped around a driveshaft?

BTW, 4x4 or 2WD?

How does the clutch pedal feel? What about the shifting, engine off and engine on?

I'm betting it had an old clutch.

The ZF's are tough to kill unless they dont have fluid in them.

hey i have been busy with work,

the trans would make the noise whenever the truck was running. i pulled the dust cover off of the fly wheel and clutch and ball bearings and springs came out. im geussing that it is the throw out bearing and the clutch return spring.

i talked to ford and for the repair they said i would need a new clutch kit and a new fly wheel. it has the dual mass system on it and the best price for a fly wheel that i have found is $750!

Any cheaper options for this repair?

when i put a clutch in my 6.9l the t-19 clutch was only 150.

Lol, yup. I would think that springs and ball bearings and other junk coming out with the inspection plate would be a sign of a problem.

I got a clutch kit (including pressure plate and bearings) and solid mass flywheel from Valair for $700.XX shipped to my door. That was for the 350 hp one. There are cheaper alternatives offered by Valair, also.

Here is where I found my clutch kit and flywheel.

There is no "return spring" inside a clutch. The fingers of the pressure plate push the fork (and thus the hydraulics and the pedal) back and engage the clutch; there is also a "helper" return spring on the pedal arm. The springs are more likely bits of the dumb-mass .... er.... dual-mass flywheel coming undone. Flywheel is up way past its bedtime.

If any of the parts looked like the ones in the fallowing link I would be very suspicious of the dmf. When mine went bad the symptoms were engine shaking and vibration, (I thought it was a engine miss).
