Almost back together

So today I got the engine back to a short block. Sealed up the bed plate and associated areas and installed the front cover and new gerotor gears. By the way the new front seal can be installed without the expensive tool successfully (with the wear sleeve) using the harmonic balancer for the wear sleeve and the seal damn near pushes in with your fingers....but obviously it sits flush with the cover.

Anyway, the question I have is stupid but I might as well ask. Once I go to install the heads, since I have not changed anything with the timing of the cam or crank is there anything special that needs to be done or the engine clocked in a specific way (no marks on balancer or cover) for install? I understand the rockers and pushrods are installed after and there is care to be observed with that.

I read the PDF someone sent and it mentioned something specific but made no sense.

Can someone clarify this misnomer please?

thanks
Joe

I would have to read this before I finished my coffee, LMAO.

It helps to clock the crank into a certain position that puts one cylinder at BDC. It's supposed to keep from bending a pushrod on restarts. At this moment I don't remember which one and don't have the information on my computer yet, but it isn't a misnomer.

Edit: I looked but couldn't find the info. Another thing you can do is roll the motor over after you get the heads on to make sure nothing binds. I think you'll be fine, but I have seen bent pushrods happen.

It's in the service manual which is also located here on this site as well as all the other Powerstoke forums.

Harmonic balancer dowel at 6 o'clock. There is an updated version that references the valve train position, which I used prior but just can't find it right now.

Joe, did you use the tool or not?

Thank you guys!

@TooManyToys....that is it!

I have PDF manuals but I am sure when I saw it I thought wth? Then ran to look for timing marks and probably saw a bright light and got distracted.

Use of the tool for the front seal....no I did not. It took some back and forth work with all four bolts (for the wear sleeve) but it seated and did not damage.

Now the challenge is the rear. I talked to Charlie at KC and the guy I bought my heads from and they never use the special tools. Believe me if I had them I would use them

thank you guys
Joe
