Please help I have a 78 F250 7.5 460 I just installed a weiand stealth intake and edelbrock 600cfm carb. Now it wont start. All it will do is spit fuel out of carb and backfire from carb. HELP Thanks, Dan
Another thing is that when i am at tdc the distributer wont go in with the rotor pointing at #1 on the cap
Sounds like the same problem I had with my 460 build. There are a couple things you can try.
1: Tape a 5/16 socket onto a long extension and stick it down the distributor hole and turn the oil pump drive rod a little bit. If it still won't go in, try turning it a bit more.
2: Turn the rotor slightly to one direction until the distributor slips in (make sure the dist. body is turned so the vacuum port is facing the radiator). When you go to start afterwords, take note of the sound (if it doesn't start). Then adjust the distributor body to either the left or the right, and then try again. If still no avail, try going the other direction. That will then tell you if you need to advance or retard your timing.
Finally got it started, but i am getting a continouse small backfire through the carb regardless of whether i advance or retard the timing. any sugestions? thx Dan

Use good tape! I had a canary when I lost my socket down the hole... thank the Lord for telescoping magnets.
When I cant get the gears to mesh where I want them, I leave the distributor where it is and blip the starter a few times. You can watch the distributor fall into place from the drivers seat.
danstc, what intake gaskets did you install with the Stealth intake? Did you use the stock crush-steel valley pan gasket or soft Felpro gaskets? Weiand's instructions recommend soft Felpro gaskets because you may have some sealing issues with the valley-pan gasket configuration.
Also, what shape is the carb in?
Double check your distributor and make sure it's not a tooth off - if it is, it will run crappy no matter which way you turn the distributor.
When I had this issue I put a glob of Vaseline on the end of a wooden dowel and gooped up around the oil pump drive shaft to make sure it was standing straight up in the hole and wasn't leaning over and not lining up with the bottom of the dizzy. Just had to wiggle the dizzy back and forth some and it dropped right in.
