1989 f150, 4.9, 5spd, LWB, 2WD, 3.08, 140000 miles. Got truck for 1000 dollors...runs great...has leak in A.I.R. system...last line is broke clean off at the fitting.
Do not want to put money into a 1000 dollor truck for emissions. We do not test here. I either want to weld up or plug the fittings. What is the best way?? What are good and bad experiences you guys have had? Will my CEL light come on? I think the only issue I'll have is my 3way cat and richened start up mixture. I have everything else working...the A.I.R. system works but do not want to buy a new manifold for this truck. Will be keeping the rest of emissions intact. Thought about cutting all the lines off the fittings then weld up the fittings...or should I remove and plug?? IF plugging what size plug and pitch thread?? This leak is about to drive me nuts and I do not like the open hole into the head. Thanks for all your help and this is a great site!! This is my first post here...just sold my 77 for the 89!!... lol.
You can very easily remove almost the entire AIR system. Leave the TAB/TAD solenoids electrically connected to keep the CEL off. If you already have a modern 3-way converter the AIR system is pretty much redundant IMHO.
So as long as the solenoids are still attached to the computer I shouldn't get a CEL?? Thats great! What about the blower for the injectors?? I can't even tell if its working. I do not feel anything or hear it. I have the heat sink on top of the exhaust under the intake and injectors. Isn't it true they added this to prevent vapor lock?? When they added the heatsink...well its more of a sheild didn't they quit installing the blower fan?? Trying to clean up the engine bay but also stay clean burning. Its a great running engine and very clean. Absolutly no blowby and very clean exhaust. Will I have a very rich condition at startup after removing the A.I.R. system?? Thanks again!
