Yes i am thinking of buying a 1982 Bronco with the 351W. It has a 2barral carb on it right now but i plan on getting a 4barral intake and carb and block off the egr system. I understand i would get about 210 horsepower by this. 210 horsepower to pull such a big truck i was just wondering if the broncos ever feel underpowered. I plan on just using this rig for off road play. It has the automatic trannny. I am just wondering that when i just the thing in 4LOW and romp on the gas would it throw itself pretty good. I understand it has the stock 3.50 gears. Also can anyone tell me some easy ways to get power out of the motor. THanks
The 351 may not have the horsepower of some these new engines, but it is sufficent. In my opinion 200 horses ain't bad to provide adequate power. The low-end is strong though. I test drove a few, can't say I played with them to much, but they could move when I gunned them. My 302 can pull pretty good when I want it to, and the 351 has more grunt. And, like the 302 (which has been used to produce mass power, mostly in mustangs), the 351 has the POTENTIAL to create even more. Short answer, it is a strong engine.
i have an 88 bronco, and it has a 302. as far as rompin around in it i can tell ur not concerned bout gas mileage bc a 4barrel will just suck the gas right out of it, or so ive had experience with it. my 302 has plenty of power and i dont know if the year of the models make a dif. but mine has 3.53 gearing and 3.73 in front...i believe thats right. but either way in low gear u've got plenty of power or so i think but im not a hardcore off-roader. so my thoughts are to go for it man. i wish i were in ur shoes. good luck to ya. EXTRA HINT---- GET GOOOOOOD TIRES
I had an '85 Bronco with the 351HO. Not really what I'd call a screamer, but it wasn't too bad. At 161000 miles I finally decided the ring blow-by was just too much and dropped in a 340+HP Ford Motorsport 351. Much better, but still not a race car by any means. I never did much off-roading in 4 Low, but I imagine that because of the torque multiplication in the transfer case it would feel pretty strong. Just remember, you've got a rig pushing the 5000 lb mark. It's not ever going to be really fast.
nelly781, more than likely your gear ratios are 3.55 rear and 3.54 front. You'd blow up your transfer case if the gears were that far apart.
