diluted oil

2008 f350, 83000 miles, changed oil today (5500miles on oil) had about 3-4 quarts too much in drip pan. pan was clean and empty when i started. smells a lot like diesel. how do you get ford to recognize this is a problem?

The new flash supposedly catches it before you start sucking oil into the intake other than that I don't know what Ford calls "normal" other than apparently they claim it doesn't harm anything, which isn't true just on basic lubrication properties.

I start with 14qts to stay ahead a little bit then use the short stick method to get an idea of how bad the dilution is as well as changing every 4K-5K miles and try to do highway driving when in regen (which is harder now that you never know when it is in regen unless you run a self test or hear it)

I am just glad they are finished with Navistar.

Be ready to get flamed for not checking your oil enough and not driving "right".

How long do you go between oil changes? I hope only 5,000 miles...

Most of us adopted a 5,000 mile oil change interval, which is in line with the severe service recommendation specifically to combat this issue. Fuel dilution happens most commonly with the regen cycle, but can also be caused by leaky fuel lines. If it consistently does this I'd take it into the dealer for proper diagnosis.

This can cause serious problems with your engine if left unchecked, I'd have it looked at!

this is a problem. Question is how to you go about addressing it. First is with the 11B23 recall flash. Have you had it?

What other symptoms do you have to support the fuel dillution as well? Everything has to come to the table before ford will generally have enough to go on aside from a fault code.

Tail pipes? clean or dirty dry or moist?

Regens..how far apart and how long to clean? Regen in city or hwy?

Idling? how much and how long? What are the hours on the motor?

Those are a few considerations.

It's a PITA but here's what I did. Installed a fumoto drain. Change on 5000 mile interval. Between changes at about every 1000 miles, I slide under and drain down to a quart low. Then I refill with a quart on new oil. I got it down to about a 10 minute exercise. hard part is reading that stupid dip stick. It worked well, kept the oil at the appropriate level and the feedback form the oil anaylsis was excellent. I'm not doing that anymore though, I have a better fix. If you are in a corn state and use biodiesel you need to read the EPA report on that. It's posted in mid december under my signature. Bottom line: bio is a lot worse in diluting the fuel than ULSD. A lot of the ULSD will "cook" out of the oil as you drive, the bio will not. Hope this is helpful.

Is this the first time such an issue has occured for your truck? Getting an oil sample analyzed might be a good idea. I'm running Rotella synthetic and running with a 5k drain interval just to be safe.

thanks for the info. this is the second time i have noticed it. brought it to the dealer and told them about it the first time, also for them to do the 11b23 recall. that recall included a high oil level sensor supposedly. at 3-4 quarts extra it still did not alarm. i told them i had just changed the oil, they said oil looked fine. now i am also losing water.

Nope. Regen will occur above 30 mph in the orginal programming.

Can last much longer than that. You just don't see the message displayed but it is still happening.

There is no high level oil sensor. I use 14 qts, monitor oil level, and change every 5k.

What about the other items I had mentioned to check?

If you still had the original program that kept the "CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER" message on until the cleaning was complete then you had already missed an eariler computer update. Either way, what you should have now is a very brief message. It is easy to miss it. If you suspect from the sound of the truck that it is cleaning you can check by pressing the middle button on the message center and then the top button. The message center will cycle through a bunch of system checks, the last one being "CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER". If it doesn't say "CLEANING EXHAUST FILTER" you are not in regeneration. Hope this is helpful.
