My truck has been doing this for a while and isn't a big deal, but thought I would ask. First thing in the morning or if it has sit for a while when you start it fires right up. It runs for about 30 seconds then dies. It is like it just used all the fuel in the fuel filter then dies. It takes a few cranks to get it fire up and then it runs rough. Pump the gas a couple of times then it is fine. After it has started and you drive it at all then it starts fine.
this is the idi's most common problem.
a repair any do it yourself guy or gal can do in just an hour or two with no removal of parts to get to the parts you need to work on.
all for under $50 or less typically.
try finding the repair cost for the other diesels most common problems in their sections.i bet its a bit over 50 bucks.
people can complain all they want about the low power compared to modern diesels.long live the trouble free IDI!
It does sound like air intrusion. Check your return line system for wet spots. That will help you determine where the issue started. It is not 100% but it is a start.
Now is the time to fix it, if it gets worse you'll be bleeding the system and hoping you get it started without killing the batteries or burning up the starter
So you guys are saying check my return fuel line? I also think that maybe I have some injectors leaking. I can see what appears to be fuel ontop of the motor. could that be the problem.
The return line caps sit on top of the injectors, most likely, fuel is coming from there and wetting everything. replacement orings: viton 111.(remember to lube them)

Yes you can go to napa and buy the injector kit. i just did this yesterday to buddy of mines truck. it comes with the fuel return line, 16 o rings, new clamps for the lines, new caps.
if this is your first time doing this you may want to pick up some extra o-rings.... my first time when i pushed the caps back on i cut a few of the o-rings and wound up redoing some of them.... they're fairly cheap just make sure you get the right ones.... i bought my return line kit at autozone (i like the people better there) and i got my extra o-rings at orielly they were the only people to have them individually and not in the kit
