I have a 03 f150 supercrew,Lariat, 2wd, 5.4 139k miles. Truck looks real clean. I have had the Ford dealership and a trusted shop tell me they hear a loose timing chain. The truck skips and throws the SES light. The code comes up that the cam position sensor is bad. It has ben replaced. They say because the chain is loose it will continue to do this. I have driven the truck and had the light not come on and run good, not great. Ford said to put a new motor in it. I can't afford that. I am not a great mechanic, just minor stuff. Could I do just the timing chain and associated parts, is there a way they could check and see if theres more going on. I am thinking I could scrape together 2k to do the work. Your advise welcome.
Here is some of what you need to know to make a decision.
There are two chains, one for each back.
Each has it's own tensioner.
The tensioners are operated from the engine oil pressure system to keep tension on the chains.
If the tensioner guides wear down, the chains' will likely hit the front cover and make noise. Some of the guide can break off and jamb things up as well.
If this is the situation, my opinion is it's not a cause to replace the motor if nothing else is wrong.
Also there could be noise from the cam phasers.
So check it all out if you decide to take it apart.
Find out how to handle the cam positions for timing before you take them apart so you can get it all back correctly.
Often running oil that is too heavey can be a cause tensioners wear out too early in their life.
Good luck.
Anyone that has a 3 valve motor would be subject to the same situation for noise. Could be a very late 03 vehichle build date. Saw this before.
Look at the cam position sensor end to see if there was any contact with the cam gear.
Only way the cam position sensor will set a code is an open harness/ winding or not sensing the cam gear in the correct time window frame of reference.
The cam position sensor times fuel injection so the PCM knows when the intake valves are open for injector spray..
