Looking for some advice.

This is my first post ever here. I have been a huge fan of Explorers ever since I first laid eyes on them in the early 90s. I really never could justify myself buying one other than just wanting one. I stuck to smaller more fuel efficient cars for all of my life.

My wife and I built our home 2 years ago. My in-laws both work for a Ford Dealership so I always had limited access to a truck (vacations, moving, special occasions). Since I have owned a home I have found that owning a truck of some kind would be extremely useful (not to mention extremely fun!).

Since my In Laws work for Ford we can get a Ford Vehicle at their price. I finally have saved up enough cash to buy a 2003 or 2004 Explorer XLT either 4.0 V6 or 4.6 V8. My question is which engine should I get? Is the V8 much more durable then the V6? I have been doing quite a bit of research and I still haven't found the answer to this question.

I am leaning towards the 4.6 V8 as the gas mileage is about the same as the 4.0 V6 and it produces more HP and a boatload more torque. I have driven both motors and I love the V8 but I am wondering if the desire is based more on want rather than need. If there is a significant improvement in lifespan then I have no problem spending the extra cash (I have more than enough money for it) but I just want to make sure. I plan on keeping the Explorer for a looooong time so I want to not end up regreting anything.

Sorry this is so long winded. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

IMHO, get what you want and you'll never regret it.

Oh definitely! I just want to make sure that I'm not over looking anything. I don't want to wish that I had done things differently.

Looking for some advice.

Both are good motors- the basic 4.0 has been around a long time (I've got it in my Ranger w/ over 100k), the 4.6 is what goes into every police car/ Town Car. They're not perfect, but they are good, overall motors. I'd have to go with the 4.6 because of the extra power and smoothness, with practically the same mileage. As for options, I'd highly recommend:
1) locking differential. It gives you "true" 4WD.
2) reverse sensing system. Very handy, and it's a bargain.
3) power adjustable pedals. Great if you have shorter drivers in the household.
4) Eddie Bauer or Limited. You have to get either one of these models to get ALL the goodies, and the owners of these seem to be the most satisfied of all Explorer owners. Heated, memory seats, trip computer, remote switches on the steering wheel. If you got the bucks, go for it!

I actually never thought about the Limited. Thanks for the advice. I will definitely be getting the Reverse sensing system. I certainly can't hurt.

What have been the imperfections with the 4.6? Reliability issues???
