E4OD Problems
This past weekend I went out and backed out of the driveway. When I shifted from reverse to drive the truck just sat there. After about 10 seconds, it shifted into drive and worked fine. I've checked and topped off the fluid. It was less than ½ quart low. Once it is in drive it works fine, it just the first time after being in another gear.
I went to Autozone and had them pull the codes.
It came up with 327, 328, 332, 334, and 452.
Looks like I've got some probs with my EGR Valve. Would the 452 code being some of my problem?
I didn't know how long it had been since the transmission had been serviced so I changed the fluid and filter including draing the T.C. I expected to find a bunch of "gunk" (my technical term) in the bottom of the pan. But it was clean. Fluid was dark but it did not have a burnt smell to it.
After I filled it up and gave it time to warm up, I went through the gears. Reverse is not a problem but it is still having problems going into Drive. With the brake on, it took it 2 mins before it acted like it wanted to shift into drive. If I let the brake off and tap the accelerator (RPM's 3000 tops), it goes into gear.
Here is a diagnostic report regarding error code 452. I probably have others for codes 327,328,332, and 334 but I will have to search and find them. This ought to keep you busy for awhile:
ERRATIC SHIFTS
BAD VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)
Can cause erratic shifts and lock up problems. May, or may not, set code 29/452 (VSS signal voltage too low).
NOTE:
VSS is located in transmission tail housing or differential.
TO CHECK VSS:
1. Remove two wire connector end.
2. Hook DVOM leads to pins on sensor. It doesn't matter which way you hook up the red and black leads.
3. Set the scale to AC voltage, 0 to 40 volt scale.
4. Raise vehicle so rear wheels are off the ground.
5. Start vehicle, put in Drive and make transmission upshift. Watch meter.
6. You must see an increase in AC voltage, or VSS is bad.
Hopefully, this diagnostic will solve your problem. If the VSS checks out okay then post back.
R.A.
