I just bought a 2001 F-350 V10 for what I think is a great deal. The guy I bought it from mentioned it had an issue and would just up and die for no reason, they removed the old remote start system and I smelt it. It was burnt bad, just stunk like burnt electronics. So I hualed it home and started going through it. The wife took it and went out to the farm and it died on the way there. Started running ruff and then died. It would crank but not even try to fire. So I towed it home and out my code reader on it, it couldn't connect to the computer. I checked every fuse in the truck and under the hood, all good. The next morning I just thought I would try it after calming down and it fired right up. Put my code reader on it and no codes present with good live data. SO I drove it around for over an hour, no issues. Parked it and left it for a coulpe days, sunday morning the same issue again. Crank but no start, and no connection to the computer. I am hoping some one out therer has had this issue and direct me to the problem.
Might be a failing PCM Power relay. Next time the engine stalls, turn the ignition to RUN withouot hitting START and observe the MIL. It should power on if the PCM is getting power but will be off if power is missing from the PCM.
FWIW, the PCM must be properly powered and operating for the fuel pump to work. Check PCM power first.
Check for fuel pressure on the fuel rail like barebones said. There is a schreider valve (valve stem) on the fuel rail. I know 2 V10 owners that were having intermittent starting problems rough running and sometimes no start at all. Ended up being a fuel pump. Pull the bed to replace it if thats what it ends up being, pretty easy to do on these truck.
