'96 Bronco needs new engine . . .

We want to go affordable . . . but not cheap! If you know what I mean.
Not sure if we should go short block, long block, crate?
How do we identify engine to get the right thing?
We have the tools and experience to do this, but which way would provide best bang for the buck?
Can you recommend (or not) any particular companies to buy from?

Well, usually a crate motor is carbed, so thats not gonna drop right in. I personally would go long block, or at least have your heads rebuilt while you swap the short block.

Displacement is embossed in the upper intake plenum on these things. That part is easy. 96 is the first year OBD-II engine management system was employed on ALL Bronco models. There were only two OEM mills used in 96 anyway (5.0 & 5.8).

I'd suggest long block. If you are gonna replace it, might as well have everything that can be redone/new be that way and done by the same folks.

I 2nd the long block. Even if you have a GOOD shop to get the head work done it would probably be more cost effective with the long block.
