I had the temp control all the way on cool and it seemed to blow A/C air whenever I had the vent switch on ANY of the dash vents. When I (supposedly) selected A/C- which just blows thru the dash vents- I noticed no difference in the temperature of the air coming out. It was colder than outside air both ways. The air coming out of the foot vents did not seem A/Ced. I realize that by popping the hood I could see if the A/C was on, but is it supposed to be?
No, your AC is not always on. Even when you have it selected, it cycles unless it's really hot inside the cab. Sometimes, when you switch from AC to panel, the duct work and interior components have cooled enough that they continue to transfer that coolness to you even though you have selected a different selection.
The selection of outlet register doesn't affect the temperature setting, so what you described isn't surprising. The clutch is only engaged in the 2 A/C positions, Mix, & Defrost (for dehumidification), so just open the hood & see if it's spinning in the other positions.
Actually, on the newer Ford trucks, the compressor can kick in on any position except "OFF", "PANEL", and "FLOOR". Many people don't seem to realize that "PANEL & FLOOR" is actually an AC position, similar to the GM "Bilevel". And, of course, the evaporator does stay cold for some time after being chilled from one of the AC positions.
