Bypass Oil filter

Finally got around to putting a bypass oil filter on my 00 - had been wanting to do this for some time. Thanks to Springerpop & the guys @ Orme bros. Added it at about 1000 miles into my last oil change. Going to run my usual 6500 mile interval and take a sample. I'm curious to see what the UOA numbers will be. Got the stuff to add the same setup to 2 of our other 7.3's. Wish I could have done this a few years ago - guess better late (112k) than never. With things the way they are I need our 7.3s to go at least another 5-6 years.

What did you end up running for a filter?

The Baldwin B164 - also have a wix 51704 (same as a Napa 1704) which is the cross ref to the B164 on the other truck.
It won't be time to change oil for a while so I can't say if they differ yet. Installed both systems over the weekend - one on the 00 F250 & the other on an 01 F350. The 250 has 112K on it & the 350 has 105K on it. Both were about 1000miles in from their last OC. Run Delvac 15w40 w/ Mob 1 filters on both. Been changing @6500.

Nice good call on the Baldwin.

Just a heads up with the Wix the 51704 is actually only a 32 micron nominal filter, while the Baldwin is 15 microns absolute with 2-3 micron nominal rating.

Unfortunately, not all cross references are created equal.

Hmmm I'm gonna leave the 1704 on just out of "curiosity" to see what the UOA #s come out like. I discovered the B164 vs 1704 differences too late to return the Napa. Only bought 1 B164 because I didn't think we were going to get both trucks done at the same time. Had to run to Napa on Sat when we finished up the 350- it was that or take the lines off of the engine.

Yeah sorry to be a bummer. I am sure the UOA will come back fine.

Don't think they'll be any worse maybe a little better - I'm interested to see how the #s on the Baldwin stack up against it & my old #'s which weren't bad for the mileage. My intent w bypass is to get to a 9-10k oil change w/ a sample @ 7500 as a check. This will cut us down to only 1 oil change per truck per yr

Yeah you should be able to pull that off no problem. Good luck and keep us posted!

Wonder why Napa lists the 1704 as a cross for the B164 if the ratings are so different? Would the wix 51704 be any different?

I don't mind having to get the Baldwin but the Napa is more convenient since they are in town and we have an acct with them

Wix and Napa will be the same.

It is an unfortunate reality with cross-references, the performance is not uniform. One thing I have noticed is that wix is typically middle of the road. Your best bets are donaldson, baldwin, fleetguard...brands like that.

Ran into this issue with fuel filters for my dodge, most cross references to the Cat 1R0750 are 5 microns, not 2. Only donaldson actually made a 2 micron cross reference.

Guess I'll order a case of the Baldwins and call it a day. Not as easy as Napa but at least I'll only have to do it once and a while.

Did some digging - looks like a better Napa choice would have been a 1050 not the 1704 - has a 10micron rating which is more in line with the Baldwin. Looks like I have some filter "testing" to do.

Yeah filter hunting can drive ya crazy!

One note with the 51050/1050 filter is that it is rated nominal, like all wix/napa filters, which is 50% efficient while Baldwins are rated absolute, 98.6% per the SAE.
