Hi guys: I'm still learning everything possible about my new 1995 PSD. Sure is somewhat different than my '79, 400cid Bronco which I took apart/rebuilt with the aid of the Bronco forum. I have 2 issues I would appreciate some input on before I just start throwing expensive parts at it. A few weeks ago, I was towing a 7500' camper from Fl. To N.C. 500 miles through Atlanta rush hour traffic, etc. No problems; temps stayed below normal range entire trip- even in stop/go rush hour for 2 hours. Half way up a 2 lane road to the top of a mt., I saw the temp guage going to the top/engine temp light flickering. No shoulders to pull over on, cars behind me, etc. Shut the damn thing down and was able to coast down to a small patch of gravel. Without going into more detail, I had the truck towed/found out the overflow tube had cracked and the radiator lost pressure. Unable to repair or put another top cap on the rad. since it is a one molded unite---so I was told. $650.00 later, she was running like before. No head gasket damage, no tranny issues, and no codes at all. Changed oil/filter which only had 800mi. on it. Changed tranny fluid, filter, and torque converter was drained. Runs great except for this new issue. After sitting for more than a few hours, especially over night, it's difficult to get her cranked. She used to start the first/everytime the glow light would go out without fail. Now--- sometimes, even after 5-6 tries with the glow plug light going out---it may or may not start. The light still goes out in the same amount of time as before---7-10 second. (1) did I smoke the glow plug relay?; (2) bad fuel pressure regulator? (didn't do a fuel pressure check but the fuel bowl is full in the morning when I check it?). (3) maybe a weak or worn fuel pressure regulator spring? (4) bad or weak battery? Had the battery tested and was told it needed to be replaced?
Issue #2: Ever since I got this truck I've been curious about this matter. When I push the O.D. to the off position on the shift column the off light comes on but only in the Park position. When I shift into any other position, the light goes off. I've tried to wiggle the column stick but the light will still not come on in any other position than Park?? All fuses in the fender well/under the dash are all good. I've pushed the button while towing and staying under 45mph. and I don't feel any shift in power or rpm's?? I assume that I must be remaining in OverDrive all the time? Would greatly appreciate any suggestions or help. Thank you all for such a great site. By the way! I said I would never purchase a Diesel and wondered why anyone would pay out good money for a motor that sounds like 10,000 loose flying nuts and bolts? Now, I know! I'm crazy about this loud/smelly truck. Jim
1994.5 - 1997 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums Here is a link to the PSD page, probably better to ask about your starting issue there.
As for the OD light it may be that you have cracked/broken wires where they enter the steering column from the shifter, maybe have a look.
