5.4 Extra Horsepower

Ok I have 2010 F150 with a 5.4 and the qustion I have is what does a man got to do to get more horsepower and better milage? Can it be done?
I have thought of dual exhaust and some kind of tuning program. Does anybody have an idea on this issue. Cat back exhaust or a true dual?
What is the best progamer out there that seems to make people happy?
With only 12k miles on it I thought be a little better.

Thanks

A very broad question... What gears do you have? 4x4 or 4x2? What type of driving? What are your current mpg's? Whats your budget for mods?

Personally I have a bone-stock 2010 XLT 4x2 5.4l with a 3:55ls rear end 27k miles. For me power is adequate and I average anywhere from 18-22mpg depending on traffic.

A good tune with a flash tuner and opening up the intake and exhaust COULD help with your woes but the thousand bucks or so you'll drop on those mods could buy you a lot of gas!

If your mileage is ridiculously low go to your dealer and see if you have the latest available tune in your trucks computer. That alone could help a lot and cost you nothing if your under warranty.

Good luck!

I personally see a supercharger in my future once I'm through 60k miles... I figure the engine is bulletproof by then and supercharging is usually around 5 psi. That will net you well over 400 crank HP and have you knocking on 500 HP.

I have had issues with hesitation from a dead stop ( pulling onto interstate ), as well as MPG. Took it back to the dealer for a computer reflash. Wow! Solved all the issues; the reflash took about 30 minutes and the dealer did it under warranty.

I have done the dual exhaust, K&N filter and an Edge tuner and still have an average 16mpg. But that's life. Chris

Exhaust and intakes are useless on '09 and newer trucks, and in fact, the intake will likely hurt your low end torque, making it feel more sluggish. the exhaust just makes it sound faster. The programmers seem to be working well though...

you want performance? how big is your wallet?

Most bang for your buck list in order of recommended purchase. each mod builds on the previous so you can avoid blowing money or spending it twice

1. SCT Tuner
2. Custom Tunes
3. Remove Silencer from Air Intake (good for 5-10 HP on Dyno with tuning, proven by PHP)
4. 4.10 or 4.56 gears
5. 2.5" Dual Exhaust, or 3" Single Exhaust
6. Supercharger (recommend the Roush. Loved it on my 2006 FX4)

Tuner + Tunes = $400
New Gears = $1,500 (roughly $700-800 per axle, parts + labor included)
Silencer Removed = Freebie

Custom Tunes + Gears will make your truck FEEL like you bolted on +100 RWHP. Changing your gears is absolutely amazing. The truck will have so much more down low grunt. Not to mention you could run up to 35" tires (with 4.56 gears) and still see an improvement.

Custom Tunes alone is worth the $400 completely IMO. It turns the truck into a different vehicle. A good tuner can make your throttle response amazing, and good trans tuning + better fuel maps just make the truck more fun to drive. It's just something you have to feel to understand.

BTW, I recommend you don't mess with the truck if you are even slightly worried about getting better MPG's. Tuning will help get better MPG, but you'll usually be leadfooting it more...so less MPG. New Gears will actually help get better in-town MPG as the motor will work less at lower RPM's, but you'll trade that for a loss of 1-2 mpg on the highway. In my 06 FX4, I got 12 MPG city only...after the blower I got 12.5 mpg city only....driving like a maniac.

You will need an 8psi kit and a good tune to get anywhere near these numbers.

6 psi on the Roush Non-Intercooled Blower will get you 412 crank HP
6 psi on the Roush Intercooled blower will get you 445 crank HP

8 psi on the Roush Intercooled blower will get you 420+ rear wheel HP (over 500 crank HP)

Don't know where you got those numbers from but they are incorrect. Roush 8psi kit is good for 445 crank hp and 500lbft of tq. To get 420rwhp out of the Roush you need to port and polish it, run 10psi, headers, and true duals 2.5", and custom tuning, and efans. Your numbers for the 6psi ni kit are right. Its still weak only producing 340rwhp on a good day. Remeber at best with all supporting mods you will get 20hp per lb of boost. The Roush blowers are good but it takes to much hp to turn them and they generate to much heat at 10psi and above to be able to give the motors and real timing. There are better options then that outdated chunk of metal.

Your name suggests you have a blower. But your data is way off. Here is a 6 psi kit on the truck if the guy who used to own this forum.

FTE Ken made 376 RWHP using Mike Troyer tuning on a otherwise 4x4 stock truck at 6 psi and 20" Roush rims.

More info on that blower

I had one myself, it's a great blower

Using your own thumbrule, he could see roughly 420 RWHP using 8psi. Which is what alot of guys do see in addition to e-fans and exhaust

Along with all modifications, i would flush the injectors. My neighbor bought a newer 5.4L with only 20k miles on it. Flushed the injectors, he said you instantly notice a hp increase
