I have a '94 F150 4x4 reg. cab longbed and the E4OD is toast. It is a work truck so I need to get a tranny in it that will hold up to the abuse I'm putting it through. I know the E4OD's are crap and I'm a little worried about sticking with it, so what are my options? Is the E4OD worth saving with a few upgrades? Or should I go with another transmission?
Is a standard conversion possible? If so, what transmission should I use? A standard conversion would be nice but I'm sure it's a little complex on a 4x4.
I have a '93 F-150 4x4 with a swapped in 351W stroker and rebuilt original AOD trans. The early E4OD's did have some problems, but most if not all can be fixed with a complete rebuild. My vote would be to rebuild the E4OD with heavy duty parts and put in a shift kit - the difference between a factory trans and a performance built one is night and day - I think you will be very pleased with the result. Spend some time on the web checking out sites and getting info on what needs to be upgraded or changed to fix some of the original problems. I can give you a list of sites if you're interested.
Conversion to a manual transmission is a huge job; stay with the E4OD.
Yeah, conversion is a significant hassle and probably not a good job for a shade tree mechanic unless you have some experience with it already.
I have a 94 F250 with 460 and E4OD. I damaged it a little when I stupidly ran low on ATF while towing. I had torque shudder and intermittent harsh shifting.
A $2,300 rebuild with all premium and or uprated components later, I am happily towing an 8,000# + trailer over hill and dale, and desert. So far I have maybe 30K on the tranny, 80%+ while towing and it is still good to go.
Unless you want to get a newer truck or like lots of mechanical work, I would do the E4OD and specify you want all the uprated components that Ford has come up with over the years to overcome the problems with the early 90s models.
