This was it 2 nights ago. I had both sides of cage partly done and tacked up. Wasnt trying to finish cage so i broke the tacks off the base and prioritized cleaning everything up with some fresh paint and cage wrap.
half doors painted and stainless panels removed and wet sanded to 1000 grit. I'm not always into this fancy cleanup stuff but it sure looks like a million bucks right now.
man, the thing that has bothered me the most since i saw them is those tube doors, not the doors themselves, but the white. cage and doors white, truck, black and red, wtf?
is it so the gas door matches? :flip/
seriously though, why white? when it just sticks out like a miscolored body panel? i know it's not that important, but this is the type of stuff that i just can't let go, and end up thinking of every time i see the truck.
Yeah white is a little off. I've been wanting to paint this thing for soo long now but I always just take it wheeling and F it up right away. I dont like this black and red paint it's what came on the donor body minus the cab which was green , now flat black. Look at the shininess in the mall pic. Little secret I poured some clean engine oil in the soap bucket so the faded *** paint could soak it up and shine. Cheap trick but it makes it pop!
I really want my rig light silver top/bottom with a dark grey center.been all talk for a while wanting to do it this summer but after I got my other 79 4x4 I put most the work into that these days.
No truck in the yard this weekend will be weird! As soon as I get it back Monday it's back on to exo cage fabrication to be done by next weekend for sure ready for Tough Trucks!
100% serious here, i love the hell out of the red and black scheme on your truck, and afaik, i don't recall ever seeing one around me with that color combo. generally they are single color or one of two different beige and tan combos that i see, i believe one is called roobeer/tan, but it's not much different, just a little darker.
hey, go post up some pics of your traction bar in the newb's traction bar thread in here.
are you cutting and splicing tube instead of bending for your cage? I can't tell what's going on there with all the welds.
It's a mixture of both. I started with 8 little stubs for the base with both ends at 60 degrees for a quick kick away from slider. The long tube I took a piece of 1/2" round bar and bent the shape for a template to make tube bends at my shop. I missed the bend just a tad 2/3 up the tube( was a little tipsy after coming home from dinner/pub) so I basically cut 4/5 through the tube and pulled Tube till my zip cut, cut closed up and I slapped on stack to hold it. Trying for the least amount of weld joints but everywhere there is one I'm putting a 4" horizontal tube brace between the tubes right over welds. I also grabbed a 8' chunk of 6x3/16 flatbar that will go in-between the vertical post with some 2 1/2" ish "speed holes" that'll look nice I think
it was getting dark in this shot but you could see the bends from side
and how it attatches to sliders with where the bolts where hold it eventually
I'm going to drill and tap the slider tube. The slider is 1/4" wall
sliders are mounted with 4 , 1/2" grade 8 bolts. Grade 5's in the pic for mockup..
put gussest on it only after deciding to run cage off it to stiffen it up from up/down flex. Gussets are a stupid thick piece of 5/8 flat bar i had laying arounf but 1/4 would of been fine. nuts are tack welded on inside of frame for quick install, removal
