I have a 98' F150, V-8 4.6 liter (auto). Changed the battery last Sat, on Monday the "check engine" light came on. I took it to my local Autozone today and they put their computer on it and came back with code 171 (told me description was "running too lean"). I have never had the light come on beofre the battery was changed. I only have 56,000 miles on my truch as well. I was going up a small grade hill and stepped on the gas and that's when the check engine light came on.
P0171 - system too lean (bank 1). Possible causes: excessive fuel pressure, leaking/contaminated fuel injectors, leaking fuel pressure regulator, low fuel pressure or running out of fuel, vapor recovery system, air leaks after the MAF, vacuum leaks, PCV system, improperly seated engine oil dipstick, leaking EGR gasket, stuck EGR valve, leaking diaphragm or EVR, oil overfill, cam timing, cylinder compression, exhaust leaks before or near the H02Sensor
Thank you....I actually found the code references with all of the info you just listed. But, I am still wondering why this happened after the battery change?
Would it be wise to disconnect the new battery and see if the light goes of and stays off? Maybe I just punched the gas too hard while it was re-learning the idling and all that good stuff? I read in the manual, you are to drive highway miles and stop and go, then let the engine sit(unstarted) for 8 hrs min...
btw....nothing else was messed with at the time of the battery change (not even a re-fuel, althought I did check the gas cap)
Thanks for advise, think I'm going to check the MAF (clean it) and then start checking for air leaks. Did a search and found that a few people have had luck finding leaks in the 45* elbow joints and hose. I'll then reset the code and see if that makes a difference? If not, back on the hunt!!
i'm one of the guys who posted finding a leak in the hose leading to the throttle body. worth a look-see. however, when it was leaking i had codes saying that both banks were running lean, which makes sense. since you're only showing bank 1 lean i'd be inclined to think that it might be something like an 02 sensor. according to several posts here you can remove the sensor & clean it with electrical contact cleaner - supposed to make them good as new (haven't tried it myself yet).
I know ive posted this same note alot but it has helped alot of people.
Try replacing the fuel filter. A clogged one will cause the sensors to report something wrong.
Its a under 20 part and takes about 15-20 min to do. I had the same problem and inspected all my hoses like crazy. As a last resort, somone on here suggested to try that. I did and it worked. That saved me $$$ from having my sensors replaced.
And on the other hand, if it doesnt work, at least you have a new fuel filter
