Help with new steering wheel install!

Hello all. I have a 2001 F250 SD 4X4 w/ Cruise Control and Auto trans. 5.4L engine

2 questions:

1. I removed my old black vinyl factory steering wheel and am trying to install a new one. (Simply for looks) Both are OEM parts but my new wheel will not go onto the splines. It begins to crush them as it seems a bit too small in the diameter of the wheel collar. The new wheel has a steel positioning piece (collar) and it seems to be crushing the splines. The old wheel seems to be using just the aluminum of the interior wheel bracket.

I reinstalled the old wheel until I can fihgure out what to do. Do I mill the inside of the steel piece to fit over the splines? Or is it supposed to be incredibly hard to install?

2. My new wheel only has 3 wires for the 5 pin connector for the cruise control. The old one used all 5 wires. Did Ford redesign and now it only requires 3 wires in the connector?

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated!

Bill

What year did the new wheel come from? The wheel should slip on/off relatively easily with no force needed.

as for the wires, you should still need all 5. Hate to say it, but I think you have the wring wheel

The new wheel looks and appears identical. It was ordered from Ford as an OEM replacement for it and is supposed to fit my 2001 F250.

Think I'd take it back. You certainly shouldn't have to mill anything to make an OEM part fit.
