My 94 Explorer's transmission started slipping when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. Is a rebuild in order or is there any other things I should try. I have already changed fluid and filter, but no difference. Where is a good place online to get a rebuilt one? I can remove it and install it myself. Could it be torque converter maybe?
First check out operation in manual 2 and see if it is solid. You should be able to drive around without excessive rpm. This will check the intermediate band. If it is just a late shift from 1 to 2 then it is likely a sticking speed governor which could be fixed without pulling the transmission. Just to mention it, a bad vacuum modulator will cause late shifts in 1 and 2.
I can put it in "1" and then shift to "2" manually at about 3000 rpm and it doesn't slip at all. And if I take off going slightly downhill it doesn't slip, only when it has to pull uphill. Any ideas?
Thanks.
when they talk about transmisions, and most people use it wrong. First I need to know if it is slipping in a gear or just doing a late shift. Seond do you have the logistics and the ability to do a minor dissassembly (not pulling the transmission)?
I don't think its a late shift. The rpm's increase but no increase in speed until it finally shifts to 2nd and they drop back down. Kind of hard to describe I guess. If this doesn't help, I will try again. Thanks.
If 1 and 2 are solid then the clutches are still good. It appears what you are saying is it shifts out of 1 but doesn't go into 2 for a while. Possible but I have trouble accepting that. Usually you have a low/reverse servo that leaks or the intermediate band snaps. If you are inclined you can get a manual at www.bulkpart.com and valve body gaskets. You have checked the fluid level? Has anyone changed the filter lately? Sometimes these are not mounted properly, because of a design change of the filter, and suck in air.
