I'd continue to asses the 390 block's viability. If it is servicable at .040, why punch a perfectly good 352 to .050 over?
You should probably look at new connecting rods since you want to play hard. I have no idea how much abuse the stock crank can handle. Some of those hot-shot racers will have to advise on it's limits.
Well Mike the point I was making is that all things equal I'd rather start off with the best possible block for a 390 build. Seeing how buying new forged pistons was mentioned, and the 352 uses the same cyl mold cores as the 390 I'd take a std bore 4.00 block over a 4.09 block as a safer starting point anyday. Plus it can take more rebuilds in the future if needed. Where the .040 block may be close to it's natural limits and possibly might need more work? Given both choices I'd take the 352 block as a better foundation to start with if I was building one engine out of both cores. Now if I wasn't buying new forged pistons and looking for the cheapest option as is yes I'd checkout the 390 and use it if it was fine otherwise. JMO of course.
Well all in all it sounds like a Fun build...just scanning thru some of the replies, I see alot of things were touched on..new rod bolts ..dont forget to have them stretched or do it yourself (if you have the gauge) Intakes..Ig you can get a streetmaster at the right price and do the plenum mods yourself (I would) because it sounds like your going to run a tall gear out back..and if your going to use the 390 truck block and it was in a mid 70's truck..you may have one with the extra CJ webbing in the crank saddle ! Thats a plus if so ! But I would have the block checked for taper in the holes..square and deck etc..and have it sonic mapped myself..I wont use a block thats going to be under .100" on the thrust side...Some do and get away with it..But with my luck if I dont cross my T's twice ! I get into trouble... Just some things that came to mind reading some of your replies !! Good Luck and keep us posted...
I haven't even had enough time to unload the motor from the truck. It's been setting in the back yard with a tarp over it I'm pretty upset about this but life has a way of getting in the way of the fun stuff. And I'm just about out of time as winter will be here in a couple weeks. I hate North Dakota
But I did take a quick look. It's a D3TE block.
Now y'all have visions of 406s dancing through my head.
A D3TE block should have the reversed 105 cast in the front.
Next step is to pop out the expansion plugs and see what size drill bits fit between the cylinders. This method is a good pre-qualifier for a sonic check.
Please forgive me for the flash rust in the cylinders. It hadn't rained here for 3 weeks. But the night I went to pick it up we had a down pour that lasted about the 15 mins it took me to get back home. I dried them out the best I could that night and my hone will take care of the rest when I put it back together.
So, this project has gone from a quick low buck re-ring on a 352 to the possibility of a homemade 406 powering this boat. What fun!
Interesting to see the PO opened up the front coolant slot of the head gasket. Normally the slot goes only to the rear on both sides and is covered on the fronts. Wonder if that had some effect on it? The oem shim gaskets do have a weep hole where the front slot on the block is covered.
Mike that's a good link you posted thanks. I do miss Mayhem Bob. He was a true gentleman.
I've made very little progress lately. Mostly, I just got things organized so I can make a big push here in a few weeks. But I thought I'd post some pics for your viewing pleasure
My early heads and the truck spec heads from the 70s. They don't look that bad and they already have harden valve seats but I think I'll stick with the older heads
I'm starting to make a collection of intakes. Now I have these two, plus I have a S code in storage and the original is still on the 65. The weird thing is the intake that came with the new 390 has a date code of 73. I didn't think that Ford had a 4v FE engine that new.
I bought a 2K stand from Summit. It was a little more than I wanted to pay and i hate that is says made in China on it but it was delivered to my door and seems to be good quality.
Now I have to figure out how to get this engine thought this door and on the stand
Oh, and I'd thought I'd show my cool new wall hanging too. When I went to pick up the engine the fellow asked if I wanted this too. So I gave him 10 more bucks and he tossed it in the truck.
Good to see some progress. Just remember to install hardened seats in those old heads.
There were 4v 390s in 76. M code. I think the latest casting was the D5xxx "T" intake.
That's a great score on the wall hanger! Can't beat 10 bucks. Looks like it's in good shape too.
Well, there's not much to tell. I'm out of time and space. The winter has set in here and I can't work outside anymore. Also, I have to put my Wife's Mustang in storage for the winter and you can see
this is my garage and there just isn't enough room for all of it. I'm still not sure how I'm going to fit the Mustang in there.
I'm ashamed to say it but this is where the 390 will have to ride out the winter.
I drenched the thing in WD40 and wrapped it with a tarp. I'm hoping for the best but expecting the worst. It really is a shame but I'm out of options.
I did make one good score a couple of weeks ago. A clean Streetmaster
So this is it. No progress. What's more is that I'm deploying in 7 days. I'll be leaving for my 8th tour but luckily this one should only be 6 months. That's means I'll be back at the beginning of summer with a refreshed bank account and itchin' to do some wrenchin'

Stay safe over there and thanks for your service. Your right when you get back the snow will be gone the birds will be singing the sun out and the project will be waiting.
