I'm new, so bear that in mind, please... Hope this is the correct Forum for this question: ran a search on "water pumps" already.
'87 F250 460 with carb ( & NO CATS!), 173K miles, water pump is making a noise (same one it has for over two years) but doesn't leak, engine doesn't overheat at all, even with a 2,500 lb. camper mounted almost on a permanent basis. Radiator clean, coolant 6 months old. I drive this a couple thousand miles a year but am contemplating a longer trip over the summer, potentially cross-country.
Just replaced the temp gauge sending unit as the gauge just didn't register one morning last week, everything seems to be fine... So far.
Question: is there really any reason to go to a more expensive H2O pump than an aftermarket GMB D125-1350, New & supposedly Heavy Duty, Lifetime Warrany (replaces OEM part# E5TZ-8501C) for $32? Are the much more expensive ones REALLY any better?
I plan on doing this myself, would replace all gaskets, the thermostat (? here too, what temp? standard one OK?), etc.
Should I do this now (really mean "when it is convenient") as a preventative measure or just add a can of Anti-Rust with Water pump lubricant?
Thanks in advance for your patience and consideration!
I'd go with the $32 LLT pump, standard temp t-stat, & the appropriate mix of antifreeze. If you think it's days are numbered, don't wait till you're stranded.
